IRL | Weekend Wrap – Round 4

Thirroul kept their back-to-back title chances alive with a nail-biting 24-22 win over De La Salle in the Harrigan Premiership at a sunny Gibson Park on Saturday afternoon. The Butchers scored five tries to four against the visitors, including two in the space of 10 minutes against a 12-man De La outfit with centre Jacob Taulani in the sin bin.

A four-try effort from Dapto winger Jack Piccirrilli wasn’t enough for his side to get the ‘W” over Wests, who ensured the Canaries stay in the top four was short-lived with a 44-26 win at home. Collegians ran out 48-6 winners over Corrimal in the remaining fixture.

Thirroul opened the scoring inside 10 minutes through centre Jye Patterson before De La hit back with two tries to take a 12-4 lead.

An attacking raid by the defending premiers down the right edge led to a Josh Martin converted try in the corner, reducing the margin to two at the break.

The two sides traded tries early in the second half before Nelson Sharp picked up a double to give his side a 24-18 advantage with 10 minutes remaining.

De La still had a final play up their sleeve, with Tyla Tamou scoring a four-pointer, but the Shire outfit had left their run too late.
