IRL | Weekend Wrap – Round 9

De La Salle have consolidated their position at the top of the Harrigan Premiership ladder, two points clear of their nearest rival, Wests, with a game in hand after a 38-16 win over Collegians at a soggy Collegians Sporting Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The weekend Wrap, brought to you by Hahn.

Trent Anderson’s men lead the competition with five wins from six starts, a 28-18 loss to Dapto in Round 6 the only blemish on an otherwise stellar start to the season.

De La Salle opened the scoring with a try from second rower Harry Samuel after he charged down an attempted clearing kick from Collies before the hosts hit back with tries to Jack Butler and Damon New to take a 10-6 lead after 20 minutes.

The visitors weren’t to be denied at the half-hour mark, with Andrew Faddy crossing for their second before winger Trey Fotu picked up the first of his hat-trick to give his side a 16-10 lead at the break.

The second half was all De La, however. They handled the wet conditions better than their hosts, scoring three unanswered tries, including Fotu’s second, before Collies scored with 5 minutes remaining.

Fotu then sealed their first-ever win at the venue in the 79th minute before heading back up the highway.

Wests defeated Corrimal 44-0 in the other Saturday afternoon fixture, while the Thirroul v  Dapto first and reserve grade fixtures scheduled for Sunday afternoon were postponed due to wet weather.

The Lower Grades

In the Harrigan Plate, Avondale Wombats kept their winning record intact in the top of the table clash with Wests, scoring a 28-16 win over the defending premiers.

Helensburgh recorded a 40-10 win over Collegians after a late switch from the unplayable Rex Jackson to Noel Mulligan Oval. Berkeley ran out convincing 36-4 winners over the Cougars.

In Harrigan Shield action, Corrimal upset defending premiers Berkeley 16-10, and the Wombats defeated the Devils 28-26.

Windang and Figtree will share the two competition points after their match was halted in the first half due to a serious injury. Northern Suburbs clash with Avondale Greyhounds was also a washout.
