Harrigan Premiership Preview | Round 2

Harrigan Premiership action returns to Gibson Park for the second consecutive week as defending premiers Thirroul faces off with Collegians in a rematch of last year’s grand final.

The Butchers have yet to open their account in 2024 after the 18-12 loss to Wests last week, while Collegians scraped home 28-22 over Dapto.

De La Salle hosts Wests at Captain Cook Oval, and both teams are looking for a 2-0 start to the season. Last week, the Shire outfit accounted for Corrimal 36-4, scoring seven tries to the Cougars one.

Last year’s minor premiers look to be in good hands with halves pairing Jack Williams and Eli Levido calling the shots again.

In a break from tradition, the Cougars host the Canaries at Ziems Park on Sunday afternoon, aiming to repeat their drought-breaking win in the penultimate round last year after almost two seasons without a victory.

A 12-man Dapto outfit almost pulled off a remarkable win over Collies last week at the Showground, taking the game down to the wire before a late Jay Watling try snatched the victory for the visitors.

Avondale Local Derby

All eyes will be on the double-header at Dandaloo Oval in the lower grades.

Newcomers and first-round winners Avondale Wombats take on the Greyhounds in what will surely be a cracking local derby in Harrigan Shield action to be followed by their match-up with Helensburgh in the Harrigan Plate.

The Wombats posted a 44-28 win over Dapto in their first foray into rugby league after swithcing over from rugby union in the off-season. Meanwhile, the Tigers are coming off a 18-all draw with the Cougars last week.
